Overwhelmed by baby products? These are the items I thought were essential but barely used, plus what I’d buy instead.
BABY ESSENTIALSNEW MOM TIPSBABY PRODUCTS I DIDN'T USE

When I was pregnant, it felt like every baby registry checklist included dozens of “must-have” items.
The truth? Many baby products are useful for some families, but there were several things I thought I needed that I barely used.
Every baby is different, and this isn’t meant to say these products are bad. This is simply my honest experience as a mom trying to keep things practical and manageable.
If you’re building your baby registry and feeling overwhelmed, I hope this helps you prioritize what you’ll actually use.
Quick List: Baby Items I Barely Used
Sleeping outfits that were hard to put on
Certain registry “must-haves”
Owlet Sock Monitor
Popular Teething Products
Things I Thought I Needed (But Barely Used)
Zip Sleepers and Long Sleeper Gowns were a huge win

Specialty Newborn Outfits
My son was 5 pounds at birth, and he wore preemie and newborn clothes for about a month. Because of that, I expected him to wear size 0–3 months for a full three months. However, he outgrew 0–3 month clothing in less than two months!
Clothing sizes vary widely from baby to baby, so it’s helpful to have a reasonable selection on hand. The good news is that many clothing items can be returned within 60 days if they don’t fit.
Those specialty newborn outfits were absolutely adorable, but many were difficult to put on and not practical for frequent diaper changes. Getting all of those snaps fastened and unfastened in the middle of the night felt like torture!
What I’d Buy Instead:
👉Simple zip sleepers (especially ones with two-way zippers for easy top and bottom diaper changes)
👉 Long sleeper gowns for quick nighttime diaper changes
🛒 Shop Amazon for 2-way zipper sleepers, (bonus if they include footed and fold over mits)
Velcro or Zipper Swaddles instead!
Traditional Swaddle Blankets
Traditional swaddle blankets can be challenging to figure out as a first-time mom, especially in the middle of the night. My baby would wriggle out so easily and loved keeping his hands up by his face, so it felt like a constant struggle trying to keep him comfortably swaddled.
What I’d Buy Instead
👉 Velcro or zipper swaddles
Tip: Fasten the Velcro before tossing them into the washer and dryer so they don’t stick to other clothes.

Baby Electric Nail Trimmer Kit
Baby nails grow incredibly fast! I was trimming my son’s nails once or twice a week.
Each session with the electronic nail trimmer took more than 30 minutes, which was far too time-consuming for me. I only used one or two of the filing heads, and they wore down quickly.
Overall, it wasn’t efficient enough for me to use again with Baby #2.
What I’d Buy Instead
👉 Manual baby nail clippers with safety “spy holes” or built-in lights to help prevent accidental nicks

Manual is sometimes best
Owlet Dream Sock
This may be a bit controversial, but this product didn’t make life easier for me.
The main issue was that our Wi-Fi wasn’t configured properly for the required 2.4 GHz connection. Setting it up became one more task on an already overwhelming to-do list, so it never worked the way I hoped.
Although it can still monitor heart rate without Wi-Fi, I found it unreliable, and it frequently beeped to reconnect.
What I’d Buy Instead
👉 HelloBaby Video Monitor — It does not require Wi-Fi, works consistently, and gives me peace of mind without overcomplicating things.

Camilia Teething Relief
These famous drops from Target not work well for my teething baby.
I tried several teething drops, oils, and roll-ons, but many offered only limited relief and my baby was still very uncomfortable.
What Worked Better for Us
Frozen pacifier pops
Organic clove oil
Chamomile oil rollers
Refrigerated washcloths soaked in water
👉 Each of these helped in different ways. Over time, you’ll discover what works best for your baby.
